    Border Enforcement and Selection of Mexican Immigrants in the United States

    Since 1986 the United States has made considerable efforts to curb illegal immigration. This has resulted in an increase in migration costs for undocumented immigrants. More stringent border enforcement either deters potential illegal immigrants from coming to the U.S., or moves the point of crossing for illegal immigrants from traditional crossing routes to more inhospitable routes. These changes are likely to place a heavier burden on illegal immigrant women as they are more likely to be kidnapped, smuggled, or raped when crossing illegally. If migration costs are not the same for all migrants, higher migrating costs may result in a change in the number and in the composition of immigrants to the United States. In the face of higher migration costs, only immigrants with relatively high expected benefits of migration will choose to migrate. Based on our theoretical model, we test for three empirical results that are associated with a stronger selection of immigrant women from Mexico relative to men as a result of higher migration costs: 1) A decrease in the relative flow of older and highly educated undocumented immigrant women relative to men; 2) A change in the skill composition of immigrant women to men; and 3) An increase in the average earnings of those groups most affected by increased migration costs. Using data from the 1990, 2000 Decennial Census, and from the 2006-2008 American Community Survey we empirically confirm these predictions.selection, gender, immigration, border enforcement

    Carlhintzeite, Ca2AlF7•H2O, from the Gigante granitic pegmatite, Córdoba province, Argentina: Description and crystal structure

    Carlhintzeite, Ca2AlF7•H2O, has been found at the Gigante pegmatite, Punilla Department, Córdoba Province, Argentina. It occurs as colourless prismatic crystals up to 0.8 mm long, ubiquitously twinned on {001}. Electron microprobe analyses provided the empirical formula Ca1.98Al1.02F6.24(OH) 0.76•H1.62O. A crystal fragment used for the collection of structure data provided the triclinic, C1 cell: a = 9.4227(4), b = 6.9670(5), c = 9.2671(7) Å, α = 90.974(6), β = 104.802(5), γ = 90.026(6)°, V = 558.08(7) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure, solved by direct methods and refined to R 1 = 0.0322 for 723 Fo > 4σF reflections, is made up of linkages of AlF6 octahedra, CaF8 polyhedra and CaF 6(H2O)2 polyhedra. The AlF6 octahedra are isolated from one another, but share polyhedral elements with Ca polyhedra. Most notably, the Al1 octahedron shares trans faces with two CaF 8 polyhedra and the Al2 octahedron shares trans edges with two CaF6(H2O)2 polyhedra. The linkage of the Ca polyhedra alone can be described as a framework in which edge-sharing chains along b are cross-linked by edge-sharing. Edge-sharing chains of Ca polyhedra along b in the carlhintzeite structure are similar to those along c in the structures of gearksutite, CaAlF4(OH)•(H2O), and prosopite, CaAl2F4(OH)4. © 2010 Mineralogical Society.Fil: Kampf, A.     Non-equilibrium Effects in the Thermal Switching of Underdamped Josephson Junctions

    We study the thermal escape problem in the low damping limit. We find that finiteness of the barrier is crucial for explaining the thermal activation results. In this regime low barrier non-equilibrium corrections to the usual theories become necessary. We propose a simple theoretical extension accounting for these non-equilibrium processes which agrees numerical results. We apply our theory to the understanding of switching current curves in underdamped Josephson junctions.Comment: 4 pages + 4 figure

    Pathway Weathering in Granitoid Rocks from Central Region of Angola: Geochemical and Mineralogical Data

    The Central Region of Angola is characterized by the abundance of granitoid rocks, whose weathering “in situ” originated the so-called residual soils. The textural, geochemical and mineralogical properties of these soils depend not only on the chemical composition of parent rock, but mainly on the local climatic and geomorphological characteristics. In the study area, sampling sites were selected, which extend from the region of Kwanza- Norte (Kassenda, Dondo) through Kwanza-Sul (Cangulo, Quibala and Waco Kungo) until the plateau of Huambo, where samples of fresh rock, weathered rock and its residual soil were collected along each weathering profile. Chemical analytical data were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of the major and minor elements, whereas mineralogical data were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), on the samples of rock and on the respective residual soil. The results obtained and their comparative analysis between the sampling sites, as well as along each weathering profile is presented. This paper allows contributing to the knowledge of the geochemical weathering in tropical areas, as is the case of Angola
